Go Green for MCS Awareness Month

Go green for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Awareness Month
by Suzanne Olson
May 14, 2:39 PM

Green ribbons signify Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and May is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Month. But you probably won't be seeing many green ribbons around.Like AIDS, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or Environmental Illness is one condition people just don't want to think about.Okay, we all know someone who reacts to a particular face cream or detergent. And there's perfume sensitivity. A lot of people can't be around perfume, and that's no big deal. But, what if our planet was so polluted that some people couldn't tolerate chemicals at all? These people would react to perfume, detergent, dryer sheets, paint, pesticides, carpet, glues, makeup, deodorant, and pretty much everything sold in stores. They would be so sensitive to such a long list of chemicals, they would have stay away from people just to survive. What if prevention and the cure for this condition, was the same: Everyone had to stop shopping. Not altogether; people could still buy natural, chemical-free products, but basically 90% of the products on the market would be in the "not recommended for your health" category.Just like any polluter, industry would say Multiple Chemical Sensitivity doesn't exist. Companies would say their products are safe. Insurers would say MCS must be psychological.Lawmakers would stick their heads in the sand, except to avert the occasional political disaster. They might hold a meeting about toxic trailers or lead in toys. And people would continue to get ill from bad products. The truth is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity does exist and is already a problem at crisis proportions. The Social Security Administration knows it. The schools know it. Employers know it.So, buy a little piece of green ribbon and wear it. And, even more important, go green. Go green for your kids. Go green for your friends. Go green for your relatives. Go green for your employees. Go green because you are sick of getting sick, and you want to live a long and healthy life. Go green, for people with MCS.

Zoo Spirit!

credits: "Animal Crackers" KIT

Boy, was it fun doing this 2-page layout -- Mags revised her "Zoo Spirit" kit, new name is "Animal Crackers", in her store now!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Our boys were always a lively bunch & each had their own personality... sometimes our home was a zoo -- the monkey always teasing & pushing everyone's buttons (guess who that was!), the giraffe watching out for everyone - keeping the peace, the lion ready to roar at a moments notice (but really just a kitty at heart).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Hope you enjoy the memories these layouts trigger of your own family times!

I finished this 2-page layout just a few days before the Microwave "event" took place. Now, 3 months later, I'm finally getting around to uploading it to my blog and giving you a brief update.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
My health is slowly improving -- it's been a very long haul, but things are getting better! I resorted to Alternative Medicine, because the traditional had failed me during the horrific experience this February (see older posts). Nutrient Therapy & Homeopathic Remedies are working very well in helping me become more functional. I've been able to get out & about the last couple of weeks (beautiful spring weather for visiting state & national parks... bird migration very timely!). Anna Salante (see www.sondriohealth.com and www.pnf.org for her story) has been instrumental in my improvement, along with friends from the yahoo support group LAForum, Parthy (NTP in Eagan MN) and many family & friends' prayers!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
I have another 2-page layout that I just did today! It was tons of fun and brought back SO many great memories. I'll post them asap. Our youngest son & his wife were just here visiting last week -- had an awesome time with them... memories triggered during their visit helped me with these layouts :-)

SLOWLY Recovering!!

I certainly didn't think I'd be down for the count for this long! While in "recovery" from the exposure/systemic reaction (2/5), we had an incident with our microwave that had long-lasting and devastating effects. I accidentally added time to a "defrost" because the power level button didn't register... resulting in a frozen leftover of rice cooking on high and burning to a crisp. The unfortunate result also included a GLAD plastic food storage container (proclaimed to be "safe" for food, "microwave, dishwasher & freezer safe") melting & burning right along with the rice.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
This was the start of 8 horrific days of recurrent anaphylaxis -- my husband thought he was going to lose me twice -- I thought I was going to die -- then I thought I'd have permanent brain damage. It was a nightmare!! Fortunately, we discovered the cause quite timely when I called our insurance company during off-hours. The gentlemen I spoke to knew immediately what had occurred as soon as I mentioned the plastic container. He used to work at a plastics company! There was a plant fire and now he is latex-sensitive!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Plastic, when it melts, emits not only the toxic plastic chemicals, but also LATEX!! God put that man in the right place at the right time... because this immediately changed the safety of our house and how it would have to be cleaned!! This is HORRIBLE!! The public has a right to know this kind of information!!!! How many others have been affected by the microwave "accidents" that occur so commonly. This particular type plastic emitted non-permeable latex, meaning it would settle as dust. Other plastics can release permeable latex when melted. This was all confirmed by an industrial hygentist that the cleaning company had consulted with.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
We tried to clean the house ourselves (with our neighbor couple), but as I continued to have anaphylaxis events... and my brain turned to mush... couldn't talk... couldn't think... could barely walk... couldn't remember one word to the next... couldn't breathe... -- we realized we had to get out & do so quickly. BUT, we had no "safe" place to go -- latex & chemicals everywhere -- and because I can't eat in restaurants, we needed a place with a kitchen. We finally found a hotel that was able to prepare a "green" room (chemical-free)... but it wasn't.... it had a fireplace... that leaked!! Even though DH tried to seal it off, I continued having anaphylaxis... the reactions were decreasing in frequency, but increasing in severity -- it was a very scary time!! My hubby sat down with the hotel manager & engineer and they came up with a plan... and were able to get us transferred (after 4 days) into a "true" chemical-safe & latex-safe room. From that point on, I gradually began to recover.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
It's now been one full month since this "further" life-changing event -- "disabled" now has a whole new meaning for me -- and life is even more restrictive now. We're still at the hotel -- the 1st cleaning company called us the day we were to sign the contract and backed out of the job. We were able to find another company, more qualified to deal with our situation (an environmental cleaning company vs just fire restoration)... another miracle! After a few more delays, they were able to start working on our house this Tuesday -- YIPEE! A scientific group will be collecting samples next week for lab testing for latex (air, porous & solid surfaces). If they're negative, we get to try to return home. If it's positive, then more work will have to be done before we can depart this one room studio at the hotel.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
A great plus at the hotel is the capability of having 2-3 "steamy" baths per day (#1 treatment for a toxic reaction for MCS'ers is Sauna Therapy)... the bathtub is the closest to a sauna I can get... and with how small the bathroom is (only toilet & tub/shower), I'm able to get it really steamy for a good hot soak with baking soda & colloidal oats. I've also been able to connect with a couple of alternative medicine professionals (one local to the hotel and another out-of-state) and have begun some homeopathic remedies and nutrient therapies. I've learned to like YAMS which are filled with nutrition and have greatly helped my extremely limited diet. There are SO many foods that are cross-reactives to latex (or cross-reactive to a cross-reactive of latex), OR contaminated with latex proteins from latex glove use in food manufacturing, packaging, distributors & resalers (including restaurants, delis, grocery stores, etc), OR filled with chemicals, dyes, preservatives. I was already attempting to eat more organic and now that's almost all I can do. Unfortunately, we live in a very COLD state... no farmer markets in winter... no organic coops nearby -- natural food stores are loaded with "natural" items -- natural is not synonomous with safe for me. So, we're limited to what is at our local grocers. Fortunately, we found another store here by the hotel that also has another location a bit closer to us (within 30 minutes). So, I'll be sending my sweety there at least once a month to shop (might have to be once a payday, cuz there organic yams are the best around!!).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
One thing that stayed with me during those 8 horrific days... when living from reaction to reaction... not knowing which end was up or down... no matter how mushy my brain got (it was "stop & eject!" - think of a tape in a VCR), my Lord was with me and sustained me with this recurring thought -- that in spite of the condition of my brain, was as clear as could be and did not waver! -- "only what's done for Christ will last". My God intervened, protected & sustained me. No matter what I've lost in the past... favorite things to do... foods... church... friends... ability to travel to visit family (3 married sons, 1 grandson (almost 2yo!), parents)... I can survive because of my Saviour. And when it comes time to leave this earth to join Him in heaven, I can only pray that the words He will say will be, "well done, thou good & faithful servant".
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
So, -- what now? For starters, we'll be "downgrading" drastically -- symplifying our home & belongings -- doing whatever is in our power to make our home "safer" -- bumping up priority of some projects that were waiting to "fit in the budget". Things that "have" to be done in order for me to be safe at home and not face further exposures. Carpets that always off-gas chemicals are going out the door. But, it's not an easy task to find replacement flooring that will be "chemical-safe" and "latex-free". So, we're in the research phase right now. Meanwhile, I have a new motto -- in 2007, my motto was "if in doubt, throw it out" when we were busy de-rubberizing our house -- now, the new one... "better to be alive & in debt, than debt-free and dead". So, even in this falling economy... we'll be making businesses happy. We had to replace the natural gas applicances last Fall, install a whole house water filtration system the year before, purchased a new "natural rubber & latex-FREE" vacuum cleaner (SEBO HepaVacuum -- http://www.allvacs.com/product_info.php?products_id=80&osCsid=fc89ebc2553464dc67ad1eee0030f384 -- at a wonderful shop in Rochester MN), more online shopping here at hotel (replacing cordless phones (EMF's bad for me!) with corded, finally got my new flour mill, etc.), and now we get to remove the carpeting (possibly just sealing some with AFM Safecoat Sealers -- http://www.afmsafecoat.com/ -- have products safe for the chemically sensitive), flooring... etc), and who knows what else...
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
We're going to be selling our cars (don't need 2 because it's no longer safe for me to drive alone) & getting either a truck or larger SUV, capable of pulling a small RV (only way I'm going to be able to travel to visit family). One of our kids is planning on buying our 2003 Mazda Tribute (wonderful vehicle!! love it!) and then we need to sell the 2005 Mitsubishi Gallant. Not the best time to be selling a car -- but some great deals out there for buying new -- just waiting on word from the car manufacturer about the natural rubber & NR latex content in their vehicle before we can move ahead.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
So, in today's economy and WITHOUT any government interference or incentives, we are "increasing" our spending!! Of course, we'd much rather be able to save and to be debt-free... but that's just not possible in our lives right now. We just need to step out in faith, complete the projects needed to make our home a "safe haven" and place where I can continue to recover... and trust in the Lord to provide for the financial needs that are in our path. Ideally would be to move to a house that's been built "chemically-safe" and "latex-free" from the bottom up (especially with the corn field behind our house -- BEAUTIFUL scenery during the changing seasons -- but a very strong allergen for me), but it's such a tough time to sell a house right now... and with decreasing home values (for those of us who maintain our mortgages) because of those who default (whether because of income lost or getting in over their heads), it's hard to think of pouring more money into it -- but it seems to be our best option, just to have a safe zone that's latex-free, latex-safe and chemically-safe.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Many times in our lives, when going through the valleys... not knowing what was around the next bend... we can hear God's gentle voice through it all... "do you trust Me?" Well, this is about the darkest challenge we've ever faced -- "do you trust Me?" -- "yes, Father God, we trust you and will continue to love & follow You, Lord -- with all our heart, soul, mind & strength -- no matter how strong or frail, no matter how rich or poor, no matter what our health, no matter how isolated we become, no matter what else falls our way -- this is it -- our love will never change, except to grow stronger -- because You, our God, our Saviour, are the same yesterday, today & tomorrow... always & forever! -- always in control... in the precious name of Jesus, amen."
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
I hope to be able to upload the layouts I had completed the week the "MW meltdown" happened. I really like how they turned out -- our wedding and celebrating 30 years!! The Chocolate Cherry Collab provided the "perfect" ingredients for the 2-page digi-spread. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did putting them together and seeing them now. Digi-Scrapping will NOT be included in the downgrades!! This is one creative outlet I hope to continue to participate in & enjoy -- to leave a pictorial legacy of our faith & family.

down-time

I had hoped to upload the layouts of our wedding yesterday, having completed a 2-pg spread using various elements from some ADSD Choco-Cherry kits. But the day got away from me (PC was tied up doing backups). . . then mid-late afternoon I was hit with another "major" allergic reaction (systemic/anaphylaxis) & am down for the count. Lord willing, it won't be an all nighter—I'm currently in the rebound stage (like aftershocks in an earthquake). . . and finally got up out of bed so wouldn't keep waking hubby.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
This occurs very frequently as a result of my latex allergy going bizerko (including my chemical sensitivities & new allergies to foods, particularly the latex-cross reactives). I've been on an emotional high & increase in energy because of breaking a record of consecutive "good" days (not needing to use Epinephrine), only to get hit on the 9th day. Great thing is that there was a whole week since recovering from the last major reaction and I was able to get this blog started! PTL! Sometimes it's very easy to pinpoint the culprit (exposure/trigger) and then can take steps to eliminate that particular risk (or at least minimize it)—other times it can be accumulative (several little things adding up to overflow)—some reactions are immediate & some delayed. Keeping a daily log of everything eaten, all my activities, symptoms, meds, etc has helped to connect a lot of dots and make our home safer for me. Unfortunately, due to the nature of our current world, natural rubber latex is everywhere and no matter how "green" you go, chemicals are in everything!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
The bad news is that there is no cure. NRLA is a progressive allergy (gets worse with each exposure) & the ONLY treatment is avoidance. Avoidance is also necessary with MCS. The biggest danger comes from airborne latex contaminating everything from food to clothing—traveling from one place to another via people (latex proteins bind to the powder in latex gloves & latex balloons & becomes airborne). Things/people can also become contaminated through direct touch from latex gloves. There are so many common things in our homes & offices, it's impossible to avoid 100%. Living in a bubble wouldn't work either because the only safe alternatives to natural rubber latex are synthetics, which are man-made using chemicals!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Unfortunately, anyone at anytime can become sensitized/allergic to NR latex—and the same thing applies to chemical sensitivities—anyone at anytime—no one is exempt. Some are at higher risk than others. I hope to include more info in future posts—education is key. I'm where I am today (life-threatening Type I NRLA) because was ignorant "about" latex. . . didn't know its relationship to rubber. . . didn't connect it to other things (ie. balloons, rubberbands, mousepads, rubberstamps, adhesives, non-skid backing, rubber grips, seals/gaskets, padding/cushions. . . just to name a few). . . didn't know anything about it. I thought it was enough to avoid wearing the gloves (or wear as briefly as possible). Boy, was that wrong! Latex even has cross-reactives! many, many foods and pollens have similar proteins & the body actually thinks it's been exposed to latex & reacts accordingly. The highest cross-reactives are bananas, avacado, kiwi, chestnut, potatoe & tomatoe—and stone fruits, many spices/herbs. . . and the list goes on & on & on. AND that's not counting all the foods that have been contaminated with latex glove use in its handling, processing, packaging and/or latex gloves/balloons used in grocery stores, delis, and restaurants. When my body finally cried "enough!", it was too late. I had to change EVERYTHING—what I could do, eat, wear. . . where I could go. . . and am now disabled, homebound 98+%.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
To find out more, please visit the website http://www.latexallergyresources.org. If you suspect you have latex allergy, please talk to your Dr ASAP! Be persistent, ask questions, learn as much as you can about it, and avoid, avoid, avoid. Make the necessary lifestyle adjustments now, while you still have a choice. Not all Drs are knowledgeable about NRLA &/or MCS and many Drs offices & hospitals are still using latex gloves (although that is changing rapidly as more is learned about it). Find a Dr who is knowledgeable or at the very least is willing to learn. Join a support group (LAForum, a yahoo group, is excellent!). Take every precaution now!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
I'll try to write more soon about MCS. Did you know there are over 200 chemicals used in "fragrance" and it's not regulated by the FDA!?? Do you know the dangerous chemicals that are in fabric softener, and that they're designed to permanently reside in the clothing & are released over time??!?? They get airborne, are absorbed into other fabrics & surfaces. . . it's one of my worst enemies! Fragrance is being considered as the "other 2nd-hand smoke". AND, you don't have to breathe them (chemicals) to be affected by them!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Well, I'm off to "try" to get some sleep. Hopefully I'll be able to upload the layouts mentioned above sometime this week—the hardest part is already done & saved on my PC (the list of credits), so you may even see them tomorrow sometime.

Oops! missed this?

♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
How could I have missed this? Bianca at Biebel Scraps was the 1st to accept me for her one-time CT call for "Intensity". This kit prompted me to do 3 layouts of our kid's weddings. It was perfect for the job and I had a lot of fun learning how to use PSE 5 at the same time. After sending her the 3rd layout, she told me I "made the list"! So, I'm on her CT as well. I'm honored to be a part of both creative teams—AND they're comfortable with my not being able to be counted on to meet deadlines (see my very 1st introduction post). I can hardly wait to see how inspiration hits this month.

Many Firsts - pt 3

Our kids' 1st Wedding
Jonathan & Dawn's wedding also took place in Holland MI. It was extra special because he was the 1st of 3 sons to get married and provided us with our 1st daughter!! Jonathan graduated from Grand Valley State University with honors, having majored in Chemistry & Health Sciences, with an emphasis in Micro-Biology. He is now working in the financial world, a positive in the midst of our country's economy crisis. He works with individuals & businesses—401K's, IRA's, Health Insurance, Life Insurance, etc.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
They spent a lot of time star gazing when they were courting. We had the most awesome night views when we lived in MI—bordered by forest on two sides and in a rural setting where there were no city lights to compete with the darkness of night. I'd never seen so many stars in my life—the sky would be thick with them, making it easy to spot the constellations—it was also thrilling to see many shooting stars.

Award from Emcee Scraps!

♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Imagine my surprise yesterday morning when I turned on my PC to follow the Choco-Cherry Collab to collect more scrumpcious goodies, when there in my email was an award from Marie at Emcee Scraps! WOW! I'm honored—it's SO exciting, being new to digi-scrapping, to find a new world of cyber-buddies. Thanks Marie!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
I'm passing this award on to the following scrappers, whose designs/artwork inspired & enabled me to get started. I'm not sure of the rules, but I'm going to include Digtals among my list. . . because if it wasn't for their awesome challenges and the freebie kit resources to do them, I'd still be stuck in the downloading craze and wouldn't have any layouts (to show my hubby that there's a reason for all that PC time!!). I'd also like to thank my friend Connie, from the LAForum (NRLA yahoo support group), who encouraged me & held me accountable for getting this blog off paper and into the realm of reality.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
And because it was SO hard to narrow it down to just 5, please check out the blog list to the right—there are fantastic designers & scrappers out there—hope you enjoy them as much as I.

ADSDesigners Chocolate-Cherry COLLAB

The ADSD Chocolate-Cherry Collab rolls out today! Here are some delicious layouts made using some of the kits you'll find in this scrumpcious blog train.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Fiona - Jan 2009

When I got the pictures of my step-grand-niece (Congratulations to Gramma Tanya!!) I knew I just "had to" scrap her. The photos were shouting for a very special showcase. I had already begun getting the preliminary kits for Chocolate Cherry and in my heart knew they were the perfect colors for Fiona. There were so many beautiful designs & papers to choose from, I couldn't use just one. This layout is comprised of goodies from 4 very creative designers. Be sure to visit them in the blog train listed below!!

Language of Love

I was invited to participate in the Picasso Challenge over at SAS (Stone Accents Studio). The January challenge was "paint a Heart". Oooooo! I got to work with my new Bamboo Fun Pen Tablet and create the titles using my own handwriting. It gave me the opportunity to work again with the wonderfully versitile papers in MagsGraphics' Choco-Cherry portion of this HUGE collab Kit. I just love how the picture fades into the paper when I used a soft "splotchy/scruffy" eraser with varying degrees of opacity.

♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥

So. . . grab your cup of coffee and settle down for some
yummy coffee mocha with some whipped cream & cherries!

Another Wedding

Hurry! Take the picture—it's SO cold!!
Andrew (our eldest) & Alison were married in Newton, KS on an afternoon following a hefty blizzard. It made for pretty hazardous driving to the rehearsal from Wichita—whiteout conditions—and we were greatly relieved that we had traveled from MN ahead of the snowstorm. Andrew was a very active toddler—looking forward to scrapping those years!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
The wedding was beautiful and the snow (lots of it) inspired me to try some special effects in PSE 5 (using a snowflake brush) on their page. The stained glass windows were extracted from a picture taken in the sanctuary where they were married.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
The kit, "Intensity" by Beibel Scraps, has now been the basis of two wedding pages—2 down, 1 to go—and has fit well for a summer wedding and a winter wedding. I was able to blend in some of the elements into the wedding by pulling in some color from Alison's bouquet.

Kelly, you and the countless others who have loved ones serving our country in time of war are in our prayers. My husband served in the US Navy for 8 years (was overseas during the Iranian crisis, 1981) and we both have dads who were career military for over 20 years (US Navy & US Air Force). We understand the grief of separation and lift you up before our Lord. May He hold you in His arms and comfort you until you're together again.

Minnesota Backyard

Brrrrr. . . minus 30 windchills. . . Brrrrr!!

Completed the Digitals January 2009 Calendar Challenge (link in favorite forums) with this lovely kit by Amanda Thorderson, "Snowbird" (originally referred to in challenge as "Winter Chill". I had already planned on using snowy pics of our backyard, but didn't know that I'd have some brand new ones to choose from! Two days ago, I was downstairs on my PC when I heard my hubby's frantic cries -- come! come quick!! Not knowing if he had somehow hurt himself or what, I went up the stairs as quickly as I could. . . then heard again. . . "quick, come & see. . . quiet!!" There in the back of our yard, just beyond our row of River Birch trees, were 3 pheasants just walking along without a care in the world. I was SO excited because my camera was right there!! We had a beautiful morning with the tree branches all iced up -- shimmering in the morning light. I immediately called hubby at work to make sure he arrived safely. . . while looking out the front window and seeing that the driveway & walkways were all dry. We had almost zero visibility -- couldn't see anything across the street OR past the tree line in back -- figured out it must be "frozen fog" on the trees. It was gorgeous!! Well. . . back to the pheasants. . . one was very obliging and sauntered into the yard for a closer shot (by the camera, not him! ha!). Then, of course, while bringing this lovely kit into PSE 5 with the photos I had taken, I couldn't leave any of them out. Especially the "frosticles" that were hanging on to the edges of the deck rail/posts and off one of the bush/trees. So, wala! This is the result.

If you haven't yet, go check out the Digitals forum. In my opinion, they have the best challenges in town -- and thanks to them, I'm now actively digi-scrappin' whenever I can (imbetween the systemic/anaphylactic reactions from NRLA and/or MCS and when "in recovery"). When I can't scrap cuz of brain fog (also get zero visibility there!), I can sometimes still point & click to download all the freebies. Please check out the blog list to the right. These are absolutely awesome designers and while many of them have their stuff in stores for purchase, most of them also offer fabulous freebies! Be sure to leave comments if you download. Now that I'm a blogger I know first hand how encouraging those comments can be!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Other forums with challenges worth checking out are SAS (Stone Accents Studio), Groovy Scraps, ADSDesigners, DSO (Digital Scrapbook Obsession - Kim's Color challenges), to name a few. OH. . . just go check them all out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many Firsts - pt 2

1st time CT for BeibelScraps
Being so new to digi-scrapping AND unable to work with a deadline, I was thrilled when Bianca at BeibelScraps let me be part of her one-time CT call for her new kit "Intensity". Once I decided which picture to use, it fell together so quickly! I had fun experimenting with new-to-me parts of PSE 5 -- the eraser I used on one layout had disappeared (maybe it wasn't an eraser, but something else?? will have to hunt for it again because I like what it did... like a scruffer scruffing vs eraser erasing (ha!) -- I found this special effect eraser with butterflies and it went SO well with the rest of the layout. Peter & Elise (our youngest son & now daughter-in-law!) had an outdoor wedding, in Holland MI, which was beautiful in spite of the rain! Pictures had to be moved from the beach to the church where the reception was held. . . making this picture a fun one to do things to (more experimenting! and learning how to use PSE 5!!).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Last month, I worked on extracting them from a window, pillar & cement background (flowers were original). . . trying for something we could frame for our wedding gallery upstairs. . . was able to tie the new background to the rich purple in her bouquet and the bridesmaid dresses. Today, I got to work with it some more -- we continually give thanks to the Lord for the wonderful girl He brought into Peter's life.

Many Firsts - pt 1

December calendar with my honey & I.
This is my very 1st completed digi-scrap layout. I participated in some challenges over at DIGITALS (link on side under 'favorite forums') and this one was using "Nanny's Garden" by Amanda Thorderson (available for purchase at Digitals). What was so great about these challenges is that it got me from the downloading freebies craze into actually unzipping and using the kits. I had to learn to be more discriminate in the kits I was getting -- it was quite addicting cuz who can turn it down if it's free??

Well written!

On the nose: stop making scents
written by Janet Griffin
January 26, 2009

I'VE had it. This is the last straw. First I had to throw away yet another bottle of shampoo because the "new, improved formula" meant changing the perfume. Now I've opened a box of facial tissues and reeled - the tissues are perfumed.

What is it that makes manufacturers of everyday products decide that we simply cannot do without artificial smells? Do they think our lives are so dull and sterile that we need constant odorous stimulation? We start our day with soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, moisturiser and/or shaving cream, all with a different fragrance, so we now wear a multiple range of smells.

To top it off, we apply perfume or after-shave cologne. We all need these items, but why is it so difficult to buy these products "fragrance-free" or "low fragrance"?

I am allergic to various perfumes. I have had to change seats in theatres, trains and planes, and I hurry past cosmetic counters.

Shopping centres are notorious. Just as each shop has its own music, which makes for a cacophony, so it is with scented candles, oil burners and a mish-mash of potpourri in different stores. Some beautiful country gift shops are unapproachable due to overpowering perfumes.

Household items are also part of the problem. Detergents and cleaning products all have added fragrances - lemon, lavender, pine eucalyptus and other botanical themes.

And don't get me started on those sprays and hideous plug-in stink bombs that are sold as room fresheners.

OK, some bathroom smells are not nice, but lighting a match soon eliminates that. Unless you boil a cabbage for hours every day, though, cooking smells are wonderful. I certainly prefer the aroma of good food cooking to the all-pervading "room freshener".

Why some people wear perfume to a restaurant is beyond me. It prevents the wearer, and people nearby, from fully appreciating the smell and taste of the food.

My sense of smell is very happy with the natural world around me. And if I move away from you, it's nothing personal - it's just all these artificial products that make you smell.

HARDSHIPS
living with "severe" life-threatening & disabling NRLA (natural rubber latex allergy) and MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities) has been a life-changing/altering event... had to quit work (teaching rubberstamping techniques, piano instruction & admin assist.)... change what can wear (only 100% cotton)... adjusting to food restrictions is ongoing (there are MANY latex-cross-reactive foods!! can no longer eat my favorites—Mexican & Italian)... loss of activities (can no longer rubberstamp, go biking, dine out, shop or spend time with friends, no grocery shopping (DH does ALL of it!)-- any other shopping is severely limited due to use of latex balloons & gloves in stores (latex proteins get airborne), dust from people/store traffic (rubber-soled shoes, tires, etc.), hazards of being out of house (fragrances, latex-cross-reactive pollens, other chemicals..), etc.

Under Construction!

Finally took the 1st step toward joining the cyber world of blogging. I love to write, so I'll have to work on keeping posts readable (not lengthy "books" each time). My next post will be to introduce myself and upload my 1st digital scrapbook layouts.
