Important things to know about LATEX Allergy

#1 ANYone can develop latex allergy! Latex allergy is progressive - it gets worse with EACH exposure - the ONLY treatment is avoidance. Testing via skin prick would be extremely dangerous and is NOT the test of choice because it could lead to anaphylaxis as well as be a dangerous exposure that would advance the progression of NRLA (skin test, the latex would be quickly absorbed into the bloodstream) -- those with serious and/or disabling latex allergy totally cringe at this extremely irresponsible suggestion.
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
#2 Latex exposures are not just skin-related (absorption). There's airborne (inhalation AND absorption when it lands on your skin, gets in your mouth, eyes, nose), ingestion (eating/drinking foods/liquids that are either latex-cross-reactives or contaminated with latex due to latex gloves in use in manufacturing/distribution/serving or latex balloons), and injection (stinging insects with latex-cross-reactive proteins in their venom, shots with natural rubber stoppers) and more (ie drugs/supplements that are latex-contaminated or have latex-cross-reactive ingredients).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
#3 Being careful and taking precautions are not enough for latex allergic people. It's everywhere (in over 40,000 products and with the airborne factor of latex gloves and latex balloons, it can piggy-back on people (hair, skin, clothing, shoes) - get in ventilation systems - carpeting (where gets redistributed airborne when disturbed by walking, ETC!)... settles on EVERYthing!
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥

#4 You can't just take medications as prevention (body adjusts and becomes used to medications taken on a regular basis, requiring even more and more to stop a reaction)... meds also dull any warning signs/symptoms that might be present and a person can suddenly find themselves in the midst of a life-threatening reaction without even knowing/realizing they'd been exposed to latex. Once latex allergy has progressed to anaphylaxis, it's only by using epinephrine that you can stop a reaction from killing you.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥

#5 you are at risk for latex allergy if you eat food, take medications or supplements, go shopping, dine in restaurants, travel on public transportation, stay at hotels, go to hairdressers, visit the doctor's office, etc ANYWHERE/THING that is where latex gloves or balloons are present or in use -- you've already had MULTIPLE exposures to latex via the foods you eat, liquids you drink, places you go, air you breathe, etc. You're at "higher" risk if you work in the following industries: medical, clowning, rubber, automotive, have had surgeries or hospital stays, have spina bifida (because of the hospital stays/surgeries), ETC, ETC.

SERVICE DOGS, my personal story...

Service Dogs make quite a difference in the lives of their owners/handlers. They’re not considered companionship dogs, although they definitely provide that by nature of their proximity. They’re specifically trained to do things to assist their owners with their disabilities, whether those disabilities are obvious or hidden. And by law, they’re allowed everywhere in public that their owner is allowed. Service Dogs can be large, medium or small, can be a variety of breeds and are trained for a multitude of tasks—which ones depending on their owner’s needs. When you come across a service dog in public, do not approach the dog because they’re probably working. However, you can ask the owner if it’s okay. Sometimes it is, but most of the time it won’t be. Please don’t feel bad if the owner says no—it’s not personal, it’s because the dog needs to stay focused on his/her job. The following is the story about my health situation and service dog, Keiko Dakota.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
I was disabled in late 2006 with severe natural rubber latex allergy, aka NRLA (anaphylaxis) and severe multiple chemical sensitivities (aka MCS), complicated by chronic lyme disease in 2007 and becoming mostly home-bound by 2008 (including no longer being able to go to church). My life took a drastic turn for the worse in early 2009 (when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, it did, drastically so). In the space of one week, I almost died twice. My life became one of severe isolation, made even harder to bear when some loved ones (family & friends) just didn’t “get it”. I have to avoid latex, doing thorough homework on anything we bring into the house - from food, medications/supplements to everyday household products. Fragrances are taboo, as are most chemicals (ie cleaning products, personal care products, many craft supplies, etc, etc, ETC!). My worst ‘enemies’ are latex, petroleum, exhaust, wood smoke and fabric softeners (and fresh cut grass, a latex-cross-reactive). But that doesn’t minimize the need to avoid them all. For NRLA, the ONLY treatment is avoidance (it’s an allergy that anyone can develop at anytime and gets worse with each exposure). For MCS, the 1st treatment is avoidance. In addition to NRLA & MCS, I’m also hearing impaired. The chronic lyme was eradicated in 2010 (or remission that has not resurfaced, as there is no test that can prove you no longer have it). Most notably, the severity of my reactions and recovery time has improved since working on building my immune system (repairing the gut) and focusing on supporting the liver’s functions in detoxification though the use of homeopathic remedies & nutritional therapy.
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
In 2011, after two years of thinking how helpful it would be to have a service dog, the opportunity came that we were able to purchase our schipperke, Keiko Dakota. Schipperke’s are considered the hardiest of small breeds and are extremely intelligent! They originated in Belgium and were used on barges as guard dogs and rodent hunter-terminators. We had a Schipperke when our boys were growing up who died when she was only 9yrs old. Fifteen years later, when I was able to get a dog to train to be my service dog, the Schipperke was the only breed I considered and my plan was to train her myself.
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Before we picked her up (had to drive out-of-state), we spent a lot of time on naming her and ended up with “Keiko” (Japanese for blessing) “Dakota” (Native American for friend)... at that time we lived in Dakota County, with many Indian populations—including the Dakota tribe). She promptly wove herself into our hearts. We went through a pretty rough spell during her 1st week with us—she came to us sick from the breeder and we almost lost her on the 2nd night (found out she was the ‘runt’ of the liter after we drove almost 3 hrs to get her). After she almost died and subsequent vet visits, the breeder offered to take her back for a refund, but there was absolutely no way we were going to put her back in that environment (turns out the breeder was operating a nasty puppy mill). Thankfully, Keiko survived and is thriving through TONS of love and a healthy diet of homemade food (she was also allergic to the food the breeder had abruptly weaned her to, and the safe food we found and had her on for 2-3 yrs changed ownership and became quite inconsistent in quality (made her sick, or she’d refuse to eat it), so we went the homemade route). There are times when I’ve said she eats better than me—and she does!
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
I was, and still am, Keiko’s trainer. From the time she came to us at 7 1/2 weeks old, I began with ‘basic’ training (the usual potty-training, sit-stay-come-heel and ‘to your mat’) using mostly the clicker method. Then, as soon as she had a good concept of the basics, I began her training as my service dog. After only a couple of training sessions for bringing me my emergency meds pouch (had 1 on every level of the house, 2 on the main floor), she recognized one day that I was in trouble (bad reaction that was steadily going downhill - progressing from systemic to anaphylaxis) and brought me my pouch. I could hardly move from the reactions taking place in my body and my thinking process was kaput, but scolded her because I thought she was playing & just wanted treats. She persisted and kept getting it and bringing it to me, several times. Later that day, it finally dawned on me that she might know something I didn’t, so I accepted it, thanked her and used my Epi-Pen -- WOW!! she was right - I needed to use my epi-pen but hadn’t realized it (a frequent/common occurrence with anaphylaxis when it’s not affecting the airway). She was about 3 months old at the time. There was one time she stopped me from going into a store... turned out there were latex balloons present, but she’s never been specifically trained to recognize latex (too dangerous)!! Over the years (she’s now 5 1/2 yrs old), she’s come to my rescue countless times—including some very serious events: I’m literally STILL ALIVE today because of my service dog’s actions!!
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
She is not just “a” dog—she’s my “service” dog, my LIFELINE at home and in the world around me. If someone threatens or attacks her, they’re doing it to me personally, and I will respond defensively on her behalf (like a tigress for her cubs, just like I did for my children when they were growing up, just like I will for my grand-kids or any small children who are in harms way). If Keiko were to be injured, permanently maimed or even killed, I would no longer have a functioning service dog and my life would drastically go backwards. It would also be heartbreaking, as any loving dog owner (service dog or not) who has lost one would agree. I use every available opportunity to help educate children on how to be kind & gentle to animals—adults should already know, but some don’t. Even if she wasn’t a service dog, you can’t treat a small dog the way you would a big dog (think 11 pound dog versus 60+ pounds). For example, rough-house-like shoving or pulling a dog -- huge difference between doing that with a german shepherd or great dane versus a mini-poodle, chihuahua or small schipperke. The shove you’d do with a large dog could seriously injure a small one—common sense for most people.
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Like all service dogs are trained for their handlers, Keiko has been trained to be with me at all times (exception in following paragraph) with her primary task being to bring me my rescue meds when I’m having a bad reaction (with or without prompting). She’s also trained to alert me when people come to the door or something’s not right outside (I do let her bark at squirrels too (it’s a dog thing, but even more so for her breed). She can “tree” them, but she’s not allowed to leave the property to chase them). Schipperke’s are great guard dogs & barkers, so it was easy to encourage her natural trait—the training is ongoing for her to understand if it’s okay with me, it’s okay for her. If someone comes in the house, unannounced, she’ll be in guard mode; and with those she knows, it can sometimes take her a bit to warm up to them (with the exception of my parents & youngest son, who she greets immediately just like she does my husband—they’ve been here more frequently than anyone else—plus we lived with my folks for 3 weeks when we 1st moved back here). We’ve had several new neighbors arrive since moving to our current home, so she’s currently “in training” for recognizing those who ‘belong’ (that’s okay Keiko, that’s their house, they belong, it’s okay). But, if you truly do not belong, beware! Schipperke on Duty!! She will fetch things for me and put them “in my hands” when needed (sometimes my hips pop out and affect my mobility, residual nerve issues from a serious injury in 2014, or other times there can be inflammation from a bad reaction that affects my joints that affect my mobility). The schipperke breed are fantastic “pullers”, which has been a challenge in training her to ‘walk with’, but a tremendous asset when I’m in a situation where there’s been a bad exposure and I need to escape... fast! If I’m shopping and turn to get something and move even a couple feet away, she will pull the cart trying to get back next to me (currently “in-training” at Meijer’s where I’ve been able to shop by myself a few times since mid-2016—the egg frig has been a challenge... having to place the cart far enough away to get the door open and stay away long enough to check the eggs for damage—this puts her too close to the wheels (AND the cart between her & me) which stresses her out—haven’t done it enough to figure out what will work best in that situation yet). She will also “fetch” Daddy, when he’s home and I’m in another part of the house and need help. If we go someplace together and we get separated, Keiko helps me “find” Daddy :-)
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
She’s my constant companion, only now with ‘play-breaks’ when the grand-kids come over—not only for the extra needed exercise, but also as part of her training. When we got her, we lived far from family. So, due to the forced isolation that NRLA & MCS naturally brings, she had not been socialized around kids when she was a puppy and young dog, with the exception of brief occasional exposure to our neighbor’s young grand-kids. Since we moved closer to family almost 2 1/2 years ago, she’s been getting that much needed socialization with young kids which makes for a friendlier & safer experience when I leave the the house (less stressful for both of us)—whether accompanied by my husband or by myself (2016 was very memorable as it included three very big milestones for me... all for the 1st time in 8 years—driving, going out by myself, and going grocery shopping all by myself). However, most ‘rough housing’ is not allowed because it goes against her training and forces us to have to go through ‘re-training’ sessions. Hands rough-housing around her face is 100% taboo. She’s been trained “no teeth” for the sake of babies & small children, and if a finger makes its way into her mouth she’ll turn her head away. But, dogs have natural instincts and if you get too rough with them, teeth can connect accidentally, and sometimes on purpose (dog’s natural defense mechanism). When using her toys to play with her, caution needs to be maintained to keep hands clear. Balls are not always a good idea, because in going for a ball that’s in motion, she may not be able to reverse direction quickly enough if fingers get in the way. Keiko has nipped a few times (when fingers got too close in rough or ball play, or someone kicks at a ball she’s going after), but no broken skin. However, she did “bite” our neighbor one time, very understandably in defense & fright—the day the EMS came and took me away by ambulance and our neighbor came to let her outside to do her business—but found her hiding behind the toilet and tried to pull her out. To this day, she does NOT like uniforms of ANY kind! (so she’s quite noisy when delivery people come).
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
It’s truly a wonder, the difference a service dog can make in the lives of those who are disabled—regardless of the type of disability. Please don’t judge a book by its cover... service dogs come in all shapes & sizes, and a person’s disabilities may be visible or hidden (mine are only ‘visible’ if I’m having a bad reaction). I truly hope my story helps to give others a better understanding of living with disabilities and about service dogs (noting that many service dogs have more strict regimes, ie police, fire & military dogs!).

WARNING! Vaccines & Latex Allergy

Vaccines containing latex may be triggering allergic reactions
to common products, like baby pacifiers.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
this is REALLY close to my heart, since i'm disabled with latex allergy. i personally KNOW the extreme dangers -- it is PROGRESSIVE (gets worse with EACH exposure) -- it can become life-threatening at ANYtime! -- and ANYone can develop it!! -- for the CDC to state go ahead and give latex-contaminated-vaccines to an infant, child (ANYone!!) as long as they haven't had an anaphylaxis reaction is LUDICROUS to the extreme!! with all the evidence & studies now available, this is literally playing russian roulette with your child... once you're anaphylaxic to latex, there's NO TURNING BACK!!! i'm now disabled because i didn't know anything ABOUT latex or latex allergy (even when i knew i was latex allergic)... back then, when nurses would ask about allergies (at a dr appt) and i'd reply latex, more often than not i'd get a 'rolled eyes' response. and NO ONE directed me to any info 'about' latex allergy until AFTER it was too late. my latex allergy went BIZERKO in Feb2007 and forever altered my life and that of my family (& friends). that in combination with my severe multiple chemical sensitivities (mcs)  made life VERY isolating... because the ONLY treatment for latex allergy is AVOIDANCE! and avoidance is the #1 treatment for mcs.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
PLEASE! do ALL YOU CAN to protect your child against developing latex allergy -- make sure your baby supplies are latex-free (ie pacifiers, bottle nipples, clothing, etc) and don't allow ANYTHING to be injected into or fed to your child that contains latex (meds, vitamins, vaccines.. anything with natural rubber syringe, stoppers, bottle cap droppers, etc WILL contaminate the contents with latex proteins!).

Studio FUN !?!?!

It's been three years since I've been able to do "hybrid" scrap-booking (that's what digi-scrapbookers call the "hands-on" scrapping that's been going on for decades). My severe NRLA (natural rubber latex allergy) put a halt to rubberstamping and the severity of my MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities) prevented me from continuing to scrap even using the latex-free materials. That's 'cuz of all the chemicals involved... from adhesives to paints to inks to papers, embellishments & more!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Thanks to a long road of nutritional supplements & homeopathic remedies, my immune system has gotten stronger. I still have to be extremely careful, even though I've been able to add some latex-cross-reactive foods back onto my 'ok' list... even though I've been able to resume "some" hands-on scrapping & other projects in the last 2-3 months, I still have to be extremely careful (repeat intentional). Because although most exposures come from known sources, there are still MANY surprise ones out there... including what caught me unawares a few days ago and rendered me a "couch YAM" for the last couple days (yams are "sweet" potatoes... and because regular potatoes are strong enemies of mine (HUGE latex-cross-reactive for me), I wanted to come up with a different term. My best friend, Melissa, helped me out with that... she knows how much I enjoy eating yams (raw, baked, roasted, chips, etc). Anyway, I had been sorting thru some supplies to set up to make some cards... had just completed a digi-LO for ClubScrap's PSL challenge and my blog post when I got hit... hard and fast... required 2 doses of epinephrine to stop, benadryl and several homeopathics (primarily anti-histamine, but also for gut & inflammatory pain symptoms that accompanied this particular anaphylaxis episode). I'm still not positive what caused this crash, but the couple suspicions came on top of a system that was already engaged in a defensive battle. Over the last couple of weeks I'd been exposed to: hotel fragrances, people fragrances & cigarette smoke, travel stuff (vehicle exhaust, latex-contaminated-road-dust, etc), farming chemicals several times (exhaust, insecticides, fertilizers, etc - we live right next door to a farm that has been SUPER busy this last month in their efforts to rescue & replant crops following the damaging wind/hail storm that hit our area). It's no wonder then, that the scales were tipped and I got hit so hard & fast... the final straw was either (or both!) a new olive leaf supplement (had been confirmed by manufacturer to be latex-safe) that I tried that morning and/or a malfunctioning air purifier that overheated, putting a burnt oil/rubber smell into the air. It is now in the repair shop for warranty service (problem still unknown)... and the new supplement is now on the "do not use" list!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Even keeping a daily log doesn't always help identify the source of the exposure that causes a life-threatening allergic reaction. I've been keeping a daily log since 2007 (wow! that's 5 yrs!!) which has helped me identify many, many triggers. By identifying them, I'm then able to avoid them... which is the ONLY treatment for NRLA and the 1st/best treatment for MCS. It's fairly easy to identify the triggers for immediate reactions, but harder for delayed ones. I believe my system was already on overload with 'recovering' from all the recent chemical exposures and that contributed to my needing more meds to stop the anaphylaxis and longer recovery time from this episode (hence the 'couch-yam' dressed in robe & pj's!).
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Life is always an adventure living with NRLA "and" MCS, that's for sure.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
If you arrived at the post doing an internet search for info on latex allergy or mulitple chemical sensitivities, there are a few resource/educational links in my blog footer (you can get there quickly by pressing control-end).
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Here's my studio - this photo shows my map-fold books in progress :-)
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
And here's a panoramic view - photo taken with my Sony Cybershot
I've used U-HAUL mattress bags, cut to fit, to cover my bookcases (scrap-booking supplies, photo albums, books and more) -- this blocks/minimizes exposures to any chemicals off-gassing from the various items. I either push them to the side or roll them up depending whether I'm reaching for something specific or "browsing". I also store scrap-booking & craft supplies in the metal filing & storage cabinets.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
For now, the card project is on hold ... we'll have to wait & see what next week brings. Meanwhile, getting all my other air purifiers checked out (1 at a time) to make sure whatever happened with the one the other day doesn't happen with the others (our home is "fragrance-free" and "latex-safe"... we have 4 air purifiers in our home... to keep up with carpet off-gassing, neighborhood chemicals, vehicle/lawn-mower/farm machine exhaust, ETC!).

My Life is in HIS Hands

I've had 3 'major' life adjustments where health events have 'altered' my life. Through it all, my Lord & Savior has been there and made HIS presence known in a miraculous way. Before, during & after, HE continues to be my Rock & Salvation. I'm going to briefly share about 2 of them.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
The 1st occurred in Dec 1994—when I suddenly lost the hearing in my right ear. I was devastated... bursting into tears, I cried out to my Lord... "what am I going to do?!??!? music is my life!" HE answered immediately and quite clearly, "No, 'I AM' your life. Music is just a tool I've given you." And throughout the remaining years of my music ministry, HIS strength was made perfect in my weakness.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
The 2nd event was in Feb 2009—when I was exposed to horrendous levels of latex and plastics chemicals through an accidental microwave fire that melted & burned a plastic food dish. You can read about this more in an older post about that event. I suffered recurrent anaphylaxis for 8 full days (and countless doses of epinephrine (epi-pen & epi-inhaler) and very high dose benadryl, etc). My husband says I almost died twice during that time. The ambulance came twice and I was taken to ER once... but they were NOT able to help me. This is the week that "traditional" medicine (BOTH doctors & drugs) failed me and a couple of dear friends directed me towards a couple of professionals who counseled and brought advanced nutritional therapy & homeopathic remedies into my life. That's another story in & of itself. What I wanted to share with you about this terrible event that catapulted me into further isolation & drastically increased the severity of my disabilities (NRLA & MCS)... when my brain was non-functioning... couldn't even complete a sentence... my speech was uncontrollably choppy... I'd start to say something, getting a few words out... and in the difficulty of speaking those few words would immediately forget what I was saying. I couldn't do anything for myself. The brain fog was overwhelming... nerve & joint pain horrible... lack of coordination & balance frightening... all happening in conjunction with the recurring anaphylaxis. It also triggered a pretty bad flareup of my chronic Lyme Disease. Typing went to the birds... my letters were getting all mixed up as I typed (like dyslexia on steroids! like the word puzzles...), my fingers began taking over... typing words that I was 'not' thinking or using (so strange that I can't even think of any examples!). Twice during that time period, I forgot "HOW" to type and there was one time I forgot "HOW" to play the piano (THAT was really scary!!!). However, with all that was going on in my body & brain (or lack thereof... many brain cells died during that event) -- there was one phrase that remained steadfast, in its entirety, throughout the entire time (and beyond!). I know for a fact, beyond any shadows or doubts, that the LORD put it there and sustained it during that whole ordeal. Even now, HE frequently brings it to mind, along with the memory that I'm alive because of HIS divine intervention! This is the phrase that kept me going...
"Only what's done for Christ will last!"
My prayer for you is that you will come to a saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. And if you already know HIM, may your faith be strengthened and encouraged in some way this day.

Absolute BEST distractor!!

Jewel, a black bear up in Ely MN, had her cubs yesterday morning. Today she's been giving us several peeks at her precious cubs (2 confirmed at this point in time). Love listening to them squeek, slurp, squeel, and purr (called chittering... a sound they make when they're contentedly nursing). It's music to my ears. I'm hooked!! And it's only going to get more exciting as they grow!!

Here are a few pics snapped while watching the den cam at bear.org:

 GROOMING TIME
NOT SURE WHAT TO THINK ABOUT THESE CONTRACTIONS!
MORE GROOMING
OH, SO TIRED... HOW MUCH LONGER?
1ST CUB BORN AT 7:22-24am CST!
JEWEL'S GIVING US PRIME VIEWING THIS AM!!
see if you can spot the cubs in the following photos??

♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
I've been a huge fan of bears for as long as I can remember. Then began collecting stuffed bears and some ceramics. When my latex allergy went bizerko I finally realized something about my bear collection... they were harboring all sorts of nasties! ... ie latex-cross-reactive pollens, airborne latex proteins (from several years of clowning and working with balloons, from the few years working in a medical setting with latex gloves, from airborne latex-cross-reactive foods)... from the ventilation system constantly recirculating, etc.... also chemically contaminated from the airborne contaminants coming in the house thru air vents, window cracks, etc... living right next door to a farm -- then add to that all the "normal" allergens that have plagued me over the years ... vacuuming my bear collection once a year (or even less!) was not enough. I needed to get rid of them. Once I made that decision, I went around and bagged up ALL the stuffed bears that were left (after I'd done a serious 'weeding' and given several garbage bags away). I felt a sense of urgency and didn't know why! But, I continued in my task... well past bedtime... until ALL were securely bagged and the bags were sealed. Then I went to bed.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
The very next day was the day of the microwave accident -- you can read about it here if you haven't already -- http://janieinmn.blogspot.com/2009/03/slowly-recovering.html -- The bagged/sealed stuffed bears were safe! They did NOT get latex-contaminated or chemical-contaminated... SO, I was able to give them away and donate many. Now, if it can't be 'rinsed' off or washed, it's not among my collectibles. My home is now a MUCH safer environment... due to many changes, not just the elimination of my stuffed bear collection.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Now, it's the REAL thing! Last spring I was hooked to the Decorah Bald Eagle cam... this time it's Jewel's den cam -- the sound of those precious cubs is music to my ears :-)  We have such an AWESOME creator!! Watching the miracle of life unfold right before our very eyes, no matter what the species, is riveting! How much more so, the miracle of human life?

Winter to Spring Transition

We attempted a trip to the zoo last month (got some FANTASTIC photos! will share digi LOs later). It wasn't easy trying to avoid the people with their stinky fragrances & chemicals (lotions, shampoos, deodorants, aftershaves, laundry detergents, fabric softener, ETC!). The hardest part was when parents grabbed their kids & pulled them away. I'M NOT CONTAGIOUS!! But, if the shoe were on the other foot, would I have done the same? I hope not, but what if I already did in past years and just don't remember?
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
The isolation that comes with being disabled with SEVERE multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) and SEVERE natural rubber latex allergy (NRLA) is real. It's only the grace of God & the support from a loving husband (and our kids & parents) that keep me going. When I do leave the house, we have to take tons of "stuff" with us... emergency battery operated air purifier (full hooded respirator), emergency change of clothing & medical supplies, emergency medications (epi-pens, inhaler, antihistimines, homeopathics, etc), all my food & snacks AND water for the day/outing. I wear HEPA/carbon nasal filters, surgical face mask, hat, gloves, long sleeves and long pants (even in the heat of summer)... have to protect my airway and cover as much skin as possible.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
With MCS, you don't have to breathe it to be affected by it (chemicals). Same goes for latex proteins. There are 4 main routes of exposure that I have to guard against: inhalation (breathing), absorption (skin & membranes (like eyes)), ingestion (eating, drinking contaminated food/drink), and injection (insect stings (several stinging insects are latex-cross-reactives... their venom has similar proteins to latex... making them an EXTREME double-whammy!! another form is any type of syringe/shots... have to make sure the syringes are latex-free and that there hasn't been any latex contamination of the serum).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Even with keeping my guard up, there are bound to be surprises in addition to the known exposures. So a simple outing to walk in the park has the potential of a bad exposure & reaction. We do our best and enjoy what time we can spend outdoors in the midst of God's AWESOME creation! We have some WONDERFUL state & regional parks in MN & WI... and our own Lock & Dam on the Mississippi River gives us some great exercise and fantastic photographic moments (lots of wildlife, birds and such).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
I had a pretty tough & dangerous winter with neighboring snowmobilers that were cutting across our property and then polluting our backyard with their petrol/exhaust. Finally, the last snowmelt occurred and aaahhh, relief! THEN, the farmer sprayed his field with amonia sulfate (AWFUL stuff for EVERYbody!!!) and my body has been feeling the affects from that ever since (and more so when he came by a couple days ago and made 2 complete passes to turn the soil under - THAT was a HORRIBLY painful day). Thankfully, our neighbors give us advance warning when they're going to mow & that helps me establish a defense zone (air purifiers on high, avoid opening windows/doors, keep exhaust fans off). It doesn't prevent chem exposures, because the petrol/exhaust and grass pollens (latex-cross-reactives!!) come in thru intake & exhaust vents... I just do what we can to "minimize" the effect. Since we got our Oreck Air Purifiers, life has been much better in the house. When it gets bad outside (from petrol/exhaust, neighborhood fabric softener, farm chems), I also turn on our Hunter HEPA air filters as backup to the Orecks. Sometimes though, the best thing to do is just crawl into bed for the duration & beyond.

If you have any questions about MCS or NRLA, please feel free to write a comment to this post with your email addy & I'll pass on what I've learned. Here are a couple great websites to get some info. For MCS: www.mcs-america.org. For NRLA, go here: www.latexallergyresources.org.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Well, that's all for now. I've got 6 LOs to share with you another day (zoo trip and visit with grandsons!). Meanwhile, PLEASE focus on PREVENTION so you don't end up with MCS or NRLA. Remember, ANYone can develop these health conditions at ANYtime. They get worse with EACH exposure! I'm now disabled because I didn't know hardly anything "about" them until it was too late. For starters, use safe unscented AND fragrance-free cleaners and personal care products. AVOID perfumes (200+ chemicals!!), AVOID fabric softeners (ALL types!!), AVOID latex gloves & latex balloons. AND do the research! learn as much as you can about the chemicals you have in your home and work hard & diligently to make your home safe for your loved ones & you!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
For those of you that find yourself in my shoes with either MCS or NRLA (or both!), I hope the links I've included for some of the "stuff", that helps me participate in life, is of help to you.

Grandsons & Traveling Hardships

Holidays 2009

Babes 2009

Mags has several packs/sets of papers, frames, ribbons & hold-em-ups to choose from. It really is a fun "build-a-kit". She also has one called "Luke" and another "Madeline". You can see them all here in her store.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
One of the hardest things about living so far from family, is not getting to spend time with our grandsons. Family viisits are rare because it's so difficult to travel that far because of my severe NRLA (natural rubber latex allergy) & MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities). There are many things I have to remain ever watchful for... avoidance is the ONLY treatment for latex allergy as it gets worse with EACH exposure. Traveling has all kinds of dangers... both chemical and latex (road dust, exhaust, road construction, fresh asphalt, industry waste that's airborne (ie refineries & power plants), gas stations, latex glove use &/or cleaning chemicals in public bathrooms, latex glove use in restaurants, PEOPLE in all these places with all the chemicals & fragrances they have on their person & in their clothing, the "unexpected" surprises (car or house fire along the freeway, blown tires on the road, etc).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Because of the latex contamination of food & drink (thru use of latex gloves in the restaurant &/or the food manufacturers facility), we have to prepare and bring travel food with us AND enough food for me for the duration of our stay. Then, where are we going? where will we stay? who will be coming to see us? and there's a whole 'nother round of preparations... sometimes so very overwhelming that it's just easier (and of course, MUCH SAFER) to just stay home (especially if encountered "major" exposures/reactions during the last trip)!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
In addition to restaurants & food manufacturers, HOTELS are notorious for using latex gloves. Mostly, because they don't know anything about latex allergy and their suppliers promote the latex gloves (they've lost business as the hospitals are going latex-free and are pushing their gloves into every mode of business). NIOSH issued an alert way back in 1997 -- 13 years ago!! -- that to avoid latex allergy in the workplace, to use NON-LATEX gloves for routine cleaning, housekeeping, food service, hair/beauty salons, etc. Yet, SO MANY BUSINESSES are still using latex gloves... and we, the consumer pay the heavy price -- ANYone at ANYtime can become latex allergic... you don't have to be in the medical profession! it's everywhere -- we've been exposed with the food we eat, the places we shop, the places we eat, the places we sleep!! -- the danger is that not everyone who is latex allergic "knows" they are... and therefore they're not avoiding it and are getting worse with every exposure... AVOIDANCE IS THE ONLY TREATMENT!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Then, who are we going to see? I can't go into their homes, so they have to come see us (whether we stay in a hotel or room at my parents that has been made relatively safe)... this means advance preps on their part -- special steps in laundering their clothing, avoiding use of all fragrances & chemicals, making sure airborne latex isn't piggy-backing into our 'safe zone' with them (latex gloves &/or balloons will contaminate their clothing, hair, skin, house, car, etc -- they pick it up in the stores, restaurants, workplace, etc), no elastic in their clothing, etc. -- the list goes on & on & on.... it's practically impossible to have a completely safe environment under those conditions. We've found that family & friend visits are MUCH SAFER when they travel to come see us in our home... because "we" can control what comes in... houseguests (family AND friends) coming to see us go thru a strict regime when they arrive -- strip out of travel clothes & bag them in plastic, shower (with soaps & shampoos that we provide) & put on 100% cotton clothing (scrubs or other) that is both latex-free and has never come in contact with fabric softener or other laundry chemicals (we now have all sizes on hand for them);  thoroughly dry & cover any hair that has been treated with chemicals (ie perm, coloring, etc).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Then there's the matter of the water.... chlorine is a killer! I have to take with us enough filtered & boiled water for me to drink for the travel days and the time we're away from home. If where we stay has chlorinated water? it is airborne every time it's turned on or a toilet flushes... this affects me in 2 ways... immediate respiratory distress AND the multiple body systems affected because of my MCS.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Life-threatening & disabling latex allergy & multiple chemical sensitivities bring with it an isolation that most people just don't comprehend. Some who may be reading this and have NRLA themselves might be thinking, "i'm not that bad", "my latex allergy is very mild", etc. Well, so was mine at one time. Latex allergy is PROGRESSIVE. It gets worse with EACH exposure. The ONLY treatment is AVOIDANCE.

long time away... what to say??

well, i knew i was behind in posting on my blog... just didn't realize it'd been 2 months! it's all i can do to keep up with facebook!! my husband worked LONG outage hours for 6 weeks ... i've spent more time in the kitchen ... and have done several scrap layouts (will upload those in another post).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
i've had so much success with homeopathics for my severe allergies, that i signed up to be a retailer for Heel, Inc. they have fantastic (& SAFE!) products -- those combined with avoidance (ONLY treatment for latex allergy and #1 treatment for multiple chemical sensitivities) & following every possible precaution has really improved my health. the frequency of my reactions and the recovery time has greatly decreased. unfortunately, the downside is that when i'm doing well, i end up taking some risks that i shouldn't and then get into serious trouble. had a very bad reaction last sunday... but, it was after breaking my record of successive days not needing epinephrine or benadryl!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
family is coming to visit - yipee! my parents for 10 days and our oldest son & his sweet wife for the weekend. the hardest part about where we live is that family is so far away. our 2 grandsons are growing like weeds!! looking forward to our next skype call with them (did our 1st a couple of weeks ago -- it was awesome! we got to spend all our time chatting & just watching them (unlike yahoo messenger where most of our time is spent troubleshooting -- ym works during "tests", but when it counts, it's awful -- we actually thought it was our camera and were looking into getting a newer webcam... then we tried skype & video was great!)).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
one of these days (after get caught up with posting my recent CT layouts), i hope to post more info on homeopathy... along with a list of popular products and option for my interested readers to purchase (meanwhile, you can check the company out here at HEEL -Inc.-- i carry many of their products in my retail store. that goal is right next to the one for posting my custom-designed jewelry online. i really don't want to have to deal with an online "store", so not sure how i'll go about it. right now it's all via email, phone & word of mouth advertisting. need to put more thought into it :-)
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
hoping to have digi-SB layouts uploaded soon, so be sure to check back here for updates.  i've participated in a few OTC's (one-time-calls) for a few designers (2 brand new!) and am still enjoying the WordArt challenges over at theStudio. i also participated in Digitals challenges this month (just HAD to have the bonus mini-kits!!).

just checkin' in

haven't had time/energy to scrap or work on photos this past month. have had a few exposures that knocked me down. most time has been spent keeping up with facebook (couple precious premies were born in Sept/Oct that we've been keeping tabs on & and an old friend's husband who's been suffering from SEVERE back problems (pain, surgeries, ETC!) for the last 12 yrs).
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
have also been doing ALOT of research on vaccinations, focusing on the flu vaccine and the new H1N1 vaccine. it's absolutely horrible what our own govt has been doing... covering up the truth about the vaccines safety, over-hyping the flu/H1N1 and promoting mass vaccinations on populations that these vaccines have been contraindicated for!! (pregnant women & young children!!). more & more reports are being released of adverse reactions to the H1N1 vaccine, including deaths and many miscarriages -- the US sweeps it under the rug by declaring "just a coincidence", when in reality they're doing "real time data collection" for adverse reactions... entire countries of guinea pigs! but, with the internet, the news still gets out -- some other countries have begun banning further vaccines and are doing further studies.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
as i was getting more & more skeptical about getting the vaccine for myself and everything i found was supporting the NO vote, i checked with my dr to get his opinion. he agreed with me -- the vaccines would be too dangerous for me. here i've been working SO hard to eliminate the toxins from my body (chemicals, mercury, ETC!), why would i purposely inject more into my body?? it just didn't make sense.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
these vaccines contain mercury & formaldyhyde just to name a couple of ingredients -- those two in & of themselves is enough to make me say NO, a thousand times... NO!! i went thru thousands of dollars worth of dental work to get all the metal, amalgams & mercury out of my mouth... and am still working, slowly but surely, to detox the remaining mercury that's in me -- my initial injury took place as a child watching my dad use mercury to separate the gold flakes from his gold panning hobby. i was also exposed extensively to pesticides as a child (campgrounds & military housing). then i almost got killed off by the MWevent of Feb07 (see earliest posts) from the formaldyhyde that was emitted from the melted/burnt plastic dish.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
i would urge anyone reading this to PLEASE make an INFORMED decision as to whether you get the seasonal flu vaccine (which doubles your chance of getting H1N1) or H1N1 vaccine... and whether you allow your children to receive the infant/child vaccinations per the CDC schedule. all these vaccinations are designed to attack the immune system and have the high potential of inflicting permanent damage. the efficacy & safety of these vaccines are in question... studies are proving them dangerous... and our government is trying to shove them down our throats. it's a travesty!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
PREVENTION is the route to go!!
Vitamin C & Vitamin D3
Exercise
washing hands frequently
keep your distance from someone who's sick
keep your distance from other's if you're sick (if able to, stay home if sick!)
Vitamin C & Vitamin D3 (repeated intentionally!)

100% Bundle of ENERGY!

Ethan at 2 yrs old
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Another 2-page layout (top is left, bottom is right)—this time of our rambunctious grandson, Ethan. He turned 2 years old just a couple days after these pictures. We were visiting in Michigan and were there long enough to get a day to babysit. He is such a joy -- SO much energy -- so much fun!!!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
Because I'm homebound due to severe NRLA (natural rubber latex allergy) & MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities), we're not able to travel as we'd like. SO... lots of pictures!... the occassional webcam experience... and much inspiration for digital-scrapping. September has been a much better month for me, healthwise... less exposures with DH's current work schedule and less cross-reactive-pollens and less neighborhood lawn-mowing!! PTL! The less reactivity & extended work hours that he's gone has given me more time to scrap.
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
I've been spending as much time as I can (off & on) working on photos. Old, OLD photos of when I was growing up.. school pics of siblings and even ancient pics of my parents when they were young! Scanning them in has been made fairly easy using the Epson Stylus Photo RX700. It even scans in from slides & negatives (had a few of those to do as well). Then, I go into my photo editing software, PhotoShop Elements (version 5) and clean them up (ie cropping, quick auto-fix color adjustment (sometimes I dont' keep the change because it changes it too much), resizing, etc.). I've also learned how to use the cloning & healing tools... so it's a breeze to coverup the scratches & speckles/spots on the photos... sortof a manual restoration of the photos. Then, I save them as PNG's ("not" jpg's)! I learned awhile back that whenever you make changes to a jpg, every time it's saved, you lose a bit of the quality from the picture. PNG's picture quality is preserved... 5 saves later, you have the same quality you had to start with!
♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
And the dual monitors? It's just as awesome as I thought it'd be—having 2 screens for working on photos & layouts is such a time saver! AND easier on the eyes!! and easier to get creative when can view the pictures AND the pages/elements ("large" mode) at the same time!!
 ♥~♥*♥~~♥*♥~♥
The layouts above also used the "In A Boy's Pocket" kit & wordart by Bianca at Project B Designs. Font is CK Brownie.
